Sta Rita Hills – Clay Loam with Deposits of Chert and Monterey Shale

Over the past 12 million years, geologic forces formed Santa Rita Hills’ transverse valley opening it to the Pacific, thus drawing in cool air off the ocean.  The soils are similarly marine influenced with layers of dense clay, clay loam, calcareous outcroppings, chert and Monterey shale.
